RIM invites Android developers to port apps to BlackBerry 10 in ‘Last Chance Port-a-thon’

Sure, porting Android applications to run on BlackBerry devices isn’t fresh news by any means, but with the impending release of BlackBerry 10, RIM is attempting to bulk up its App World offerings in time for the big reveal. The Waterloo based company has already held two previous “port-a-thons” in an effort to get new developers on board, and it appears as though RIM is holding a final “last chance port-a-thon” before devices begin to hit the market later this month.

RIM isn’t skimping out either. There’s cash in it for developers, too. Approved applications will score the developer $100, with a maximum of 20 apps allowed. That’s not all. Those who submit more than five applications will be automatically entered for a change to win one of 250 custom BlackBerry 10 devices.

In order to get in on the action, you’ll need to register for the event at the source link below. Make sure to pay attention to the full list of instructions, as you’ll need to register as a vendor for BlackBerry World and request unique signing keys before you get started.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z could be unveiled next week in Japan

Android Central

Last week in Las Vegas we saw the first of Sony’s 2013 smartphone line-up, and now it may be time for a refreshed Sony tablet to join the fray. A device by the name of “Xperia Tablet Z” briefly appeared on a product listing page for Japanese carrier NTT Docomo, indicating that the tablet would appear alongside the Xperia Z at a “Docomo smartphone lounge” event in Fukuoka, Japan next Tuesday, Jan. 22. The listing has since been pulled, but not before screen captures and Google’s webcache could confirm its veracity.

Adding fuel to the fire is Japanese Twitter account @Xperia_Info, which earlier in the week reported hardware details for the device, along with the “Xperia Tablet Z” name. These specs include a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 1920×1200 resolution screen, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, 32GB of storage, water and dust resistance and a 6000mAh battery. The tablet’s thickness was reported to be just 6.9mm, suggesting that a “wedge” design similar to the Sony Tablet S and Xperia Tablet S may have been employed.

If the Xperia Tablet Z is unveiled in Japan next week, those in the West will likely get their first look at the device at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain in late February.

4.2 update for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus is live on Google’s servers, ripe for the picking

Sprint G Nex

The Android 4.2 update (JOP40D) for the Sprint flavored Galaxy Nexus is now live and hosted by Google. We’ve not yet seen any reports of an OTA, but adventurous types can manually download the update and install it with one of the various methods you’ll find in the Galaxy Nexus forums. To get the roughly 100 MB update package, just click this link and save it somewhere on your computer. As mentioned, this package is direct from Google and won’t contain any funny business. Then visit the forums if you need help getting it installed.

We have no idea when the OTA will start to roll out, but we’ve been watching for it for a few days since a leaked version was discovered at SXTP Developers. Since it’s there for anyone to grab, we have to think that the OTA is close. If you see it, be sure to holler.

Your move, Verizon.

Sony Xperia ZL spotted in red ahead of international release

Sony Xperia ZL

The Sony Xperia ZL may be coming to market in more than just black and white if these photos of a deep red model are to be believed. We had a look at the black and white versions of the Xperia ZL back at CES in Las Vegas and really enjoyed the quality of the handset, but the red version was nowhere to be found. The photo above is reportedly a prototype model handled at a South East Asia launch event, and word is that we shouldn’t expect this for a worldwide launch like the other colors. The design is apparently identical, save for a back plate that’s smooth rather than textured.

This is a touch confusing considering the white and black models were shown off so extensively at the major launch event in Las Vegas. Sony may have some final tweaking to do on the red model before it’s ready for a consumer release, or it may be holding the third color as a special edition or regional device. Red version aside, we have no firm pricing or release date for the Xperia ZL (or it’s brother, the Z) anywhere in the world. If you happen to be holding out for the device to make an appearance in the states, you may want to prepare to have it imported from overseas.

XperiaBlog has a good handful of pictures of the red Xperia ZL, if you’re so inclined, at the source link below.

Sony Xperia Z to get Android 4.2 ‘shortly after launch’

Android Central

The Xperia Z will be first Sony phone to launch with Jelly Bean when it arrives in late February or early March, but out of the box it’ll run Android 4.1 rather than the latest version 4.2. While the 4.2 upgrade isn’t a big deal for “skinned” Android handsets, some of us like to be on the latest OS version, and in a recent online Q&A session, Sony fielded a question about future 4.2 upgrades for its new flagship device.

The good news is that a 4.2 update is scheduled for shortly after launch, but unfortunately that’s as specific as Sony’s being with timeframes at this point –

“Xperia Z launches on JB 4.1, but will receive 4.2 shortly after launch. As always, we’ll share more info on this over the coming weeks on the blog.”

Unlike the jump from 4.0 to 4.1, Android 4.2′s features are mostly UI-specific changes to stock Android, meaning they’ll be less visible on a phone that’s running a customized version of the OS. Regardless, Sony’s commitment to a quick 4.2 upgrade will come as welcome news to fans of the platform. Here’s hoping the company can deliver on its pledge of a speedy update.

HTC One SV now available from Cricket for $369 sans contract

Android Central

Cricket has officially put the HTC One SV (read our review) up for sale on its website, bringing this little red beauty to willing customers for $369 without a contract. This decidedly mid-range priced device with some high-end flare is an interesting prospect for Cricket customers looking to stick with their carrier and have a quality handset. The One SV has a 4.3-inch WVGA display (read how Jerry feels about that,) Snapdragon S4 processor at 1.2GHz, a 5MP camera and that undeniably HTC “One” design wrapped around it. The device is running Android 4.0 and packing Cricket LTE support as well if it’s live in your area, with no increase in your monthly bill for the faster data speeds.

If you happen to live in a market that Cricket offers service in, you can get your hands on the device at the source link below. Pricing is set at $369 retail, but online we’re seeing $40 in discounts for a final price of $329 — again without a contract. Cricket’s plans are competitive as well, starting at $50 per month with unlimited talk, text and data (1GB of LTE.)

Oh, and did we mention that our One SV review is up?

First images of Samsung SCH-I425 ‘Godiva’ trickle online

Posted Jan 16 2013 by Scott Webster in Carrier News, Handset News, Hot Rumors

godiva

The first photos of the recently-leaked Samsung SCH-I425 ‘Godiva’ handset have arrived online, giving us a look at the forthcoming Verizon smartphone. Unfortunately there are still very few details to go with this handset however we do know that it will feature a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and 1280 x 720 display.

It’s worth pointing out that these photos reveal that the Godiva does not have a physical QWERTY keyboard, something which many in the Android space expected. We, like others, assumed this would be an entrant into the Stratosphere family and thus expected a keyboard. Maybe a Droid Charge 2 is in order? ;)

Red Sony Xperia ZL Surfaces At Recent Launch Event

There’s no doubt the Sony Xperia ZL smartphone was one of the big stars at last week’s CES and while this device probably will only arrive in a standard black or white color variation— we now have an idea of how it will look in an attractive, yet slightly outrageous color. Sony recently held an Xperia ZL launch event for the South East Asian markets and brought with it a special edition red color of the smartphone. As you can see, the device still features that sexy and sleek design with its glossy black display— but has an almost blood-red metallic backing. In addition, there are some slabs of black lines that hug the outside edges of the phone. Pretty attractive indeed, isn’t it?

While this special prototype was on display at the event, Sony is adamant with its claims that this color will not be available when the device will be launched later this year. We’ll have to take its word for it now— but don’t be surprised if we see this bad boy creep up in retailers’ shelves at some point in 2013.

MediaFire launches file sharing app, includes 50 GB of cloud storage

Android Central

MediaFire has launched their cloud storage app for Android today, offering new users 50 GB of storage for free. Files can be easily shared via e-mail, social networks, SMS, and just about any other avenue you could need. There are a whole bunch of subscription tiers if you need to host more files, or need more flexibility with your hosting.

MediaFire had to dodge a few accusations once it got lumped in with MegaUpload as a focal point of illegal file sharing, but they’ve done a good job clearing out any offending content. Now MediaFire is right up there with Box.net and has a web interface that’s easily as nice as DropBox’s. Though the Android app is fairly bare-bones for now (the lack of uploading from the system Share menu is a little tough to swallow), the website has a great photo viewing interface, smart keyboard shortcuts, and simple drag-and-drop functionality. If nothing else, the mobile app will be a fine spot to access files that you’ve been uploading from the desktop.

Which cloud storage service do you use the most? Is Google Drive good enough, or do third-party options offer you something else?
