Seesmic for Android updates with Instagram viewing, adds ads to the free version

Seesmic for Android

In a case of being careful what you wish for, Seesmic for Android got itself an update today that brings along some added functionality — as well as the inclusion of in-app advertising.  But we’ll get to that in a second.

First, the good: Seesmic — which long has been my Twitter client of choice, even if I’ve strayed from time to time –has added the ability to view Instagram and Twitter photos directly in the timeline, and you can no natively add images to Twitter proper. It’s removed support for Chatter, and fixed some bugs. Good stuff.

And, yes, advertising has been added. But there’s also a Premium version available. And for that $2.99, you’ll get rid of the ads, plus a few more new features, such as the ability to combine views from different accounts. (Kinda like you can do in other Twitter apps.) For those of us who run multiple Twitter accounts, that should be three bucks well spent.

Update: Looks like the pro unlock doesn’t work on Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason. Let’s hope that gets fixed ASAP.

Voice-controlled personal assistant app Utter! APK now available

Ever since the release of the iPhone 4S, Android developers everywhere as well as Google themselves have been working to create their own version of Siri. Now that is not to say that Apple was the first to incorporate voice-to-text features and voice search functionality in their smartphones. We all know that Google had this up and running in Android for the last couple of years. Just to be clear, Siri does all of this and a lot more as well and it’s the extra stuff that has many users and developers interested. There are several Siri-like Android apps in the works and XDA developer brandall has been working on a voice-controlled personal assistant of his own, called Utter!. Last time we checked, the app was in early beta form and from the latest forum activity, it’s clearly still a work in progress. XDA has now released an early-alpha APK for the hardened tester community. Utter! has focused on interactions with specific apps that are in your phone to separate itself from the pack. Feel free to check out our previous article for more info and a video of Utter! in action.

T-Mobile Web Guard blocking un-naughty sites

T-Mobile customers have probably heard of Web Guard. This is a web filter meant to prevent the kiddos from accessing adult content. But it seems it is not perfect, as OONI has come to find. The service seems to be restricting a plethora of websites that are not related to blocked categories.

Such categories include the following: Alcohol, Mature Content, Violence, Drugs, Pornography, Weapons, Gambling, Suicide, Guns, Hate, Tobacco, Ammunition. And while these categories seem pretty clear, Magenta’s system seems to have some issues recognizing the nature of certain sites.

OONI has found that sites like cosmopolitan.com, newgrounds.com, sportscn.com, bbcprofit.com and livesports.pl are restricted from users under 18 with Web Guard activated. The list goes on to include other women advice, sports, finance, music, news and computer security websites.

As expected, parental controls are not always perfect. T-Mobile’s system probably picked up certain keywords that classifies these as adult sites. And maybe a few exceptions like these may not be very worrisome, but what if we turn the tables around?

Certainly, a system with such notorious flaws probably doesn’t restrict all sites that are, in fact, for the adult audience. It is unknown if T-Mobile will be doing anything about the matter. After talking to a customer service representative, OONI found that T-Mobile’s solution was to deactivate the service. Something that may leave both children and parents in a difficult situation, regardless of the decision.

Hit the source link for more details and the full list of restricted un-naughty sites. Also, don’t forget to hit the comment section to let us know if you have experienced this issue with T-Mobile’s Web Guard. Do you have a good solution for it?

Semi-Official Android 4.0 w/TouchWiz Leaked For AT&T Galaxy S II

Earlier today we learned that the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket LTE for AT&T had it’s official build of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich leaked and now here we are, later on in the night, and the OG GSII on AT&T is getting the ICS treatment as well.

A semi-official build, straight from Samsung was leaked for the device and our friends at RootzWiki were able to get ahold of the system image where it can be flashed using Odin. Users are reporting that pretty much everything is working without hiccup, so we’re looking at a near-release build of Android 4.0 (with TouchWiz) for the Galaxy S II.

Installation is a fairly easy process but as Dima in our comments points out, this will mess with your bootloader. That being said, unless you have experience in these matters, it may be better off to wait until the device officially receives its update via Samsung/AT&T.

Archos Arnova A9G3 tablet passes through the FCC with few details

French consumer electronics company Archos has turned a lot of heads in the last three years with their Android phones and tablets. The FCC has just cleared another Archos Android offering, this time another tablet. Details on the Archos Arnova A9G3 are still pretty meager, but what we can make out from this FCC photo is that there seems to be some sort of dual-speaker design on the back of this slab. The A9G3 is also rumored to come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and sport a 9.7 inch display. It’s certainly not the whole picture but it looks to be headed down the right path so far. Feel free to peruse the FCC filing in the source link below.

KD Collage: Create collages of your photos on Android

Crafting beautiful collages can never be as easy and exciting once you get the hang of it. If you’re a trigger-happy type of person who keeps important memories by capturing photo snapshots of key events of your daily life, then we’re happy to introduce you to an interesting application known as KD Collage.

KD Collage is the latest addition to the list of photo-editing Android apps made available on the Google Play Store. Handy for decorating and editing pictures on the go, KD Collage lets you create beautiful photo collages with your own personalized background. Users can also add text effects to give information on their work of art.

The application offers numerous photo collage styles–frames, patterns, and designs, each with its own unique style and appearance.  Each design or layout is unique and provides a specific number of photos that it can support. For a more personalized touch, users can choose different background images, gradient themed walls, textures, or even your own personal photo from device’s gallery.

In addition to that, KD Collage supports a 90-degree spin of collages that even lets you pick a desired aspect ratio. Collages that are crafted using the application can be saved directly in your device’s local storage and you can share them directly with friends. You can even set your creation as your wallpaper.

Not only that, KD Collage lets you keep track of your recent collage entries and lets you select what format to be used for the saved images. This is a great feature if you’re expecting to keep high-resolution photos intact when the collage is made.  KD Collage is, in fact, among the handful of applications that offer users to save their crafts in full High Definition format.

What separates KD Collage from the rest of the photo-editing apps in the market is that it offers many customizations compared to its competitors. With just a series of taps on the options menu and a bit of effort, you can transform any ordinary picture into a colorful work of art in the form of a photo collage.

On the app’s homescreen, users are shown numerous options. You can start by selecting the “New Collage” or explore recent works. Selecting the New Collage button will take you to another screen that offers several collage templates that you can use. Each template is unique and only supports a specific number of pictures. Adding photos can be done in a breeze. Just tap the image placeholder and choose the selected photo you wish to add.

The toolbar on the bottom part is useful for changing and editing collages. In here, users can edit backgrounds, rotate the canvas or change the aspect ratio of their works. There is also the feature of adding custom texts and the application offers a lot of options for that, too. Once the entire collage is done, simply tap the Save tab to save your work of art to your device.

Overall, KD Collage truly stands out by offering the most comprehensive photo-editing tools on the go. Sharing and making beautiful collages becomes so fun and easy with the KD Collage application. KD Collage is available in the Google Play Store as a free application or as a paid version.

Have you tried sharing your photos to your friends in the form of collages?  What application do you currently use for that?
